The NJM 4- or 3-Person Marathon Relay
Frequently Asked Questions:
Q: When will the relay start?
A: The relay will start at 7:30 AM on Sunday May 4th with the
marathon start
Q: Will partners be able to watch the
start?
A: The start for all races is 1/4 of a mile from the
transition area on the boardwalk. You may watch your partner start and then
relax before your hand off. It is suggested that runners get to the
correct transition area at least 30 minutes before the runner is due
to arrive. See course map for details.
Q: How will the transition take place?
A: Well before handoff, the waiting runner should check in with the
transition manager. This allows the race committee to keep track of who is
on or off the course.
Each team will be issued one Winning Time(R) Chip. This should be attached
by a Velcro strap (supplied with chip) to the current runner's ankle. In the
transition area this chip will serve as your baton - simply release it from
the current runner and strap it to the next runner's ankle. This is the hand
off.
Q: What are the legs of the 4-person
relay?
A: The legs of the race are as follows:
(1) the first runner will complete 5 miles.
(2) the second will complete 8.1 miles.
(3) the third runner will complete 5.1 miles.
(4) the fourth runner will complete 8 miles
Q: How will the 3-person relay work?
A: Any combination of course legs (see above) may be combined or
substituted. There is a short (1/4 mile) distance between the two transition
areas. For example:
(1) the first runner could run 5 miles
(2) the second could complete 8.1 miles.
(3) the third runner could complete 5.1 miles.
(4) the first runner could complete 8 miles.
Variations of the above are encouraged. Use your judgment to plan out the
race and ask questions of the
relay director if you are unsure.
Q: I originally registered in one
category but would now like to race in another - how can I do this?
A: Any substitutions / changes must be made in writing before April
15 and may require an additional $10 fee.
